The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 20 proclaimed the day Youth Sports Champion Day to honor the Georgia Impact Soccer 2011 Girls Elite Team for winning the Development Player League National Championship.
Chairman Harry Johnston read the proclamation, praising youth sports for teaching leadership and sportsmanship in Cherokee County. Recreation and Parks staff provided season highlights: the team went undefeated in 11 league games, scored 76 goals and conceded three, won Southern Regionals in Austin and claimed the national title in Los Angeles by winning the final on penalty kicks after a 1'1 draw.
"Now, therefore, I, Harry Johnston, on behalf of the Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim today, Tuesday, 08/20/2024, as Youth Sports Champion Day in Cherokee County, Georgia," Johnston read. Commissioners invited the players and staff forward for a photo.
The proclamation recognizes volunteers and the contribution of youth sports programs in the county; staff said photos and proclamation text would be posted on the county website.
