Hendersonville Library asks county for staff to add hours; commission approves additional funding contingent on city match

Hendersonville Library representatives told Sumner County commissioners they need one additional cross‑trained full‑time employee and a pay adjustment for the operations manager to sustain expanded hours and outreach.

The library director said the city of Hendersonville had agreed to provide $20,000 and that the county had previously offered $16,880 toward expanded hours. "If the county would consider putting that just not designated for part‑time, but toward that full‑time position plus the $20,000 that the city has agreed to give us, then basically we would just need an additional $7,448," the director said, describing a plan to open eight additional hours per week.

Commissioners debated converting part‑time funds to full‑time, benefit loadings and long‑term salary impacts. One commissioner noted the county uses a COLA plus an additional 1.5% supplement this year, and staff suggested market adjustments when positions clearly fall short of comparable roles in neighboring jurisdictions.

After discussion, the commission approved an amendment to increase the county’s contribution to support the library’s requested schedule change, subject to the city’s $20,000 contribution and the library opening the additional eight hours as proposed. The motion did not obligate the county to convert other part‑time lines beyond this request.
