The Beaver Dam Unified School District wellness committee reported to the board on its three‑year progress under district wellness policy 8510, describing staff and student initiatives designed to promote physical and mental health.
The committee’s presenter summarized programming that included a Beaver Bites cookbook fundraiser, book clubs, a wellness fair with community partners (including dental and courts partners), staff hikes, art nights, yoga classes, and family events at the YMCA. The presenter said marketing of programming will be increased to boost participation beyond internal email and Google forms.
On participation and incentives, the presenter said 275 staff were enrolled in district health insurance this year and 218 qualified for the wellness discount. For next year the district has changed the wellness component so staff may meet the requirement with a provider-signed physical rather than the prior biometric screening and health risk assessment, a change intended to address staff privacy concerns about biometric data.
The presenter also described school-level activities tied to the wellness plan—examples included winter walking programs at the high school, a middle-school career fair and community-service day, elementary wellness weeks, and PTO-supported events. The district will post its required wellness self-assessment to the district website in the coming months, and the committee encouraged additional volunteers to join the quarterly meetings.
Board members asked about meeting dates and participation; one member noted the first wellness meeting of the year is scheduled for early August and that meetings generally last 30–45 minutes.
The item was presented as an informational update; no board action was required.
