Committee approves school‑supplies‑for‑parking‑tickets program and authorizes 2026 emergency plan
Summary
The committee approved a summer school‑supplies program that allows a $15 donation in lieu of a $25 parking ticket (July 6–31) and authorized the mayor to sign the 2026 Tuscaloosa County Emergency Operations Plan, described by staff as an annual, non‑substantive update.

The Public Safety Committee approved several routine items, including a summer run of the "school supplies for parking tickets" program and authorization for the mayor to execute the 2026 Tuscaloosa County Emergency Operations Plan.
A staff presenter asked the committee to authorize the school‑supplies program to run July 6 through July 31. Under the program, participants donate $15 in lieu of a $25 parking ticket; the presenter said the supplies would be delivered to city schools before classes begin August 10. "Last year we collected 1,084 supplies and dismissed 248 tickets," the presenter said.
The committee also considered the 2026 emergency operations plan. "There are no substantive changes to the document at all," said Mr. Hooks, the city's new emergency operations manager, describing the plan as a 414‑page annual revision that consolidates and renames material but does not change city responsibilities. The committee voted to authorize the mayor to sign the plan.
Both measures were approved by voice vote during the meeting; council members asked no substantive amendments and staff confirmed logistics and delivery timelines for the school supplies.
