Storm topples tree at Clayton County animal exhibit; animals moved and USDA notified

Deputy Director Ean Popenhagen told the Clayton County Conservation Board on May 5 that a wind event snapped the top off a large tree and caused damage to the fox and raccoon enclosure.
Popenhagen said the animals were not injured and were moved into other empty enclosures. Hometown Insurance and the Iowa Communities Assurance Pool (ICAP) were contacted and an insurance adjuster is scheduled to inspect the damage this week. Popenhagen was authorized to clear the fallen tree.
Popenhagen also said the U.S. Department of Agriculture was notified and approved the temporary relocation of the animals. The board did not record estimated repair costs at the meeting.
The board’s authorization to clear the debris allows staff to secure the exhibit and begin repairs pending the insurance adjuster’s assessment.
