Brandon Goins was sworn in as Oxford’s police chief during the June 9 meeting of the Oxford Board of Commissioners.
The oath was administered by the presiding official and taken before the board and attendees; Goins recited the pledge to enforce the criminal laws and to faithfully discharge the duties of his office. Commissioners and attendees applauded after the ceremony.
The meeting included several ceremonial recognitions. Sandra Thompson of the Historic Preservation Commission presented the HSC 2026 stewardship award to Chad Moultrie for restoring a property at 218 College Street. Commissioner Carlos Vallejo presented a proclamation honoring the Oxford Lady Dogs flag football team for winning a championship and named players and coaches in the proclamation. The board also issued a proclamation recognizing Terron Downey, a Vance Charter High School coach and Oxford native, for his contributions to youth athletics.
Commissioners used the ceremonial portion of the meeting to highlight the city’s investments in youth programs and to thank outgoing staff while welcoming new hires. No disciplinary or operational policy changes related to the police department were discussed; the agenda moved to presentations and public comment after the swearing‑in.
