Warrick County school board adopts stricter wireless device policy for students

The Warrick County School Corporation board unanimously adopted revised wireless communication device policy 5350 after a second reading.
Dr. Redmond introduced the policy and said it mirrors state requirements while clarifying district practice: "a student who brings a wireless communication device to school shall, upon arrival and throughout the school day, keep the device stored away, powered off, and inaccessible in a school‑approved storage location," with medical and IEP/504 exceptions, he said. He told the board the change primarily affects high school students and noted, "we will get the communication out to families likely by Wednesday of this week to just include a few things and asking them to have some conversation with their children prior to the start of school so they understand these slight changes."
Board members asked whether there would be a soft rollout. Dr. Redmond said buildings will educate students during the first days and enforcement would follow in the next full week, describing a short practice window: staff will explain expectations over the first two or three school days and then begin enforcement. He also urged parents to use school phones or coach messaging apps when they need to reach students during the school day.
A motion to adopt the policy was made, seconded and carried with no recorded opposition. The district will notify families and provide building‑level guidance before the new school year.
