Lago Vista council authorizes city manager to pursue Travis County SP3 siren funding

The Lago Vista City Council unanimously passed Resolution No. 26-2192 to give the city manager authority to work with Travis County and participate in the SP3 program for outdoor warning sirens and related flood gauges.
The resolution does not guarantee funding but allows staff to engage with the county and state funding process so the city can be considered early in the roll-out. Supporters said the system could provide flood warnings and be configured for other hazards such as wildfire and tornadoes.
Councilmember Benfield described the siren program as essential after recent flooding and urged the city to keep the item on future agendas even if grant funding is not awarded. Staff and former-system operators advised mechanical sirens have been more reliable than some electronic systems in the past, and that vendor-selected layouts and flood-gauge redundancy will determine final placement and coverage.
The motion was made by the mayor pro tem, seconded, and passed unanimously. Staff will continue vendor and site planning and return to council for site approvals and any required matching funds.
