VFW Post 1555 asks for ceremonial burial site for synthetic flags; commission to research options

Representatives from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1555 asked the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission on Aug. 26 for permission to ceremonially retire synthetic American flags by burying them in a location within city limits rather than burning them.
Parks staff explained the organization needs a sizable, accessible site to accommodate an honor guard and presentations and that the initially proposed children's-playground area would not be feasible because a 6-by-6-by-6-to-8-foot excavation would conflict with irrigation, water and electrical infrastructure. "Because of the infrastructure there is, it's not gonna quite work for that large of the hole for that initial year," Linda Herman said.
Jason Rose was identified as the applicant and said the VFW is the central collection point for flags and would prefer an ADA-accessible location for a ceremonial burial. Commissioners suggested potential locations—such as a veterans cross area in Upper Park—and asked staff and the applicant to scout and return with options. No motion was made; the Commission provided direction to research possible sites and report back at a future meeting.
Next steps: staff and the applicant will study accessible locations in Chico and return to the Commission with site recommendations.
