The Lago Vista City Council voted unanimously March 3 to hire Ron Joy as the city’s next police chief. City manager Charles told the council the hiring panel screened more than two dozen applicants, narrowed the pool to six and then to three finalists; after additional interviews he recommended Joy, citing roughly 30 years with the Texas Department of Public Safety and command‑level experience.
Joy, who city staff said lives in Lago Vista and attended the meeting, told the council he is “happy to be here” and intends to stay in the community. The council asked questions about recruiting, training and compensation; several members said Joy’s residency and vision were strong positives.
Mayor Pro Tem moved to approve the city manager’s recommendation, Jess Hall seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. Council said staff will arrange a public event so residents can meet the new chief.
The appointment completes a months‑long search launched after former Chief Beau Shears resigned to take a position in Brenham. Staff said the city received more than 26 qualified applications and conducted multiple interview rounds, including a six‑member screening panel that included outside law‑enforcement representatives.
