Commission to form apparatus committee to study ladder-truck solutions and firehouse options

Commission members spent the largest portion of the meeting discussing options to address the department’s ladder-truck constraints and the limits of the downtown firehouse. The group agreed to form an apparatus committee to carry out a technical first pass — evaluate chassis dimensions, door-height limitations, mid-mount versus rear-mount options, and the feasibility of fabricating a custom unit — and to return recommendations to the commission.

Participants noted three general paths: buy or establish a north-end substation to shorten response distances; relocate or rebuild the downtown firehouse (temporary relocation and rebuild was described as an option); or refurbish or custom-fabricate a ladder and renovate the existing station. Several speakers observed that many modern rear-mount ladders are too tall for the current door openings and that mid-mount aerials add to vehicle length, complicating fit in the historic downtown house. One member summarized the practical trade-off: "...are you going to do work on your car or do work in your house?" — a framing offered as a decision between buying new apparatus or investing in the building.

Committee work was framed as the next step: assemble a small group with mechanical and operational expertise, gather fabrication drawings or vendor input, and if necessary commission a third-party study that selectmen or finance boards will likely request before funding. The commission set an expectation that the apparatus committee should be ready with an initial technical recommendation in the near term and discuss options at the next round of meetings. No procurement or budget decisions were made at this meeting.
