Mahwah commission reviews Green Fair turnout, considers youth outreach, Rockland Electric grant briefing and semiquincentennial tree planting

At the May 13 meeting the Mahwah Environmental Commission reviewed the 2026 Green Fair and identified ways to boost youth attendance and donations.
Sustainable Jersey consultant Karin LaGreca described the event as having a positive turnout. Commissioners noted that youth participation was limited, discussed moving the event away from the Senior Center to a more youth-friendly location, and proposed collaborating with local scout groups for outreach. Members suggested using the Environmental Newsletter and other digital tools to increase donations associated with the event.
Chair Richard Wolf said he had reached out to Glenn Dowson to invite a Rockland Electric representative to a future meeting to review an energy-awareness program grant; Business Administrator Ben Kezmarsky expressed interest in attending that briefing. Commissioners discussed postponing the May 27 meeting or addressing the grant at the June 10 meeting.
Wolf also asked members to help identify a suitable planting location for 25 trees planned to mark the U.S. semiquincentennial, warning that the planting could not proceed without an appropriate site.
The commission adjourned at 8:57 p.m.; the next meeting is scheduled for May 27, 2026 at 7 p.m. The minutes do not record assigned staff responsibilities, funding sources for tree planting, or a confirmed date for the Rockland Electric briefing.
