Chief reports 133 calls, two notable Main Street fires; Rescue 5 generator to be replaced at no cost

The Chief reported to the commission that the department responded to 133 calls for service over the reporting period, providing a category breakdown for medical calls, fire calls, hazardous responses, rescue, public-service calls and non-emergency responses. "Incidents, we respond to 133 calls for service," the Chief stated.

He singled out two fires of significance: a contents/kitchen fire at 46 Main Street and a cooking-appliance fire at 84 Main Street. Both produced clear video of the events; the Chief said the 84 Main Street incident included video showing a malfunction of the alarm/suppression system.

The Chief gave a detailed account of apparatus maintenance. A recurring generator failure on Rescue 5 led to the service vendor and the generator manufacturer repeatedly attempting repairs; the vendor has agreed to install a brand-new replacement generator under warranty at no cost, and the manufacturer will rebuild the original unit. Several engines and ladder units still carry open work orders; the Chief said the department will continue sending vehicles to third-party shops for diagnosis and will act on recommendations.

The commission discussed vehicle priorities and the timing of upcoming upfits for a new utility/tactical unit and for Engine 4 and Engine 2. No motions or votes were taken; the commission asked staff to form an apparatus committee to develop a prioritized plan for repairs and replacements and to report back to the committee in coming weeks.
