Fire marshal: eight investigations last month; surveillance footage aided two cases

Paul, the fire marshal, told the New Canaan Fire Commission the department completed eight investigations in the past month and, for the first time, used surveillance footage to aid two probes. "We had eight investigations this past month...for the first time we had surveillance footage assisted with two investigations," he said.
Paul briefed the commission on recent building-related work: systems testing at St. El St. Alawishia School is scheduled for later in June with an anticipated completion by month-end; the phased renovation at Locust Avenue continues, with work progressing unit by unit to avoid displacement; and a certificate of occupancy was issued for the proposed relocation of the alternative high school at 212 Elm Street after a joint inspection with the building department, although officials do not expect occupancy until next year and furniture has not been ordered.
He also referenced two recent incidents on Main Street: 46 Main Street was a contents fire centered on a kitchen, while 84 Main Street involved a cooking appliance fire and produced clear video of the event and the fire system malfunction. Paul invited questions about any items in his report; none required substantive follow-up at the meeting.
The commission did not take any formal action on these items; they were presented for information. Members asked that the department continue to monitor renovation projects and provide updates at future meetings.
