MBTA, MassDOT outline train schedules, fares and traffic controls for World Cup matches

MBTA and MassDOT officials gave detailed operational guidance for travel to and from the World Cup matches in Foxboro, urging fans to use public transit when possible and to plan for crowding on match days.

MBTA General Manager Phil Ang said the MBTA will operate 14 trains per match to and from Boston Stadium, and recommended rail as the most convenient option. "Boston Stadium train fares roundtrip are $80 and you can purchase your roundtrip ticket to the World Cup on the M ticket app," Ang said. He also explained that boarding queues will form at South Station (Dewey Square/Summer Street) and that passengers must hold a valid same‑day World Cup match ticket to board.

Ang said trains will start leaving Foxboro Station about 30 minutes after the final whistle and then run every 15 minutes until the last train. The MBTA will extend subway service on match days (into 4:00 a.m. on June 13 and to 2:00 a.m. on other match days) and will deploy multilingual staff at major stations to guide riders.

MassDOT described traffic-management steps near the stadium, including a dynamic bus lane on Route 1 during peak periods, heavy police presence for traffic control, portable cameras for real‑time monitoring, tow trucks on standby and new wayfinding signage on I‑95, I‑495 and Route 1. Travelers were encouraged to download Mass511 for real‑time updates; MassDOT said it has added a widget showing travel times to Boston Stadium from major corridors.

Officials urged riders who can work remotely on match days to consider doing so, and reminded drivers to "pack patience" given anticipated congestion. MBTA and MassDOT said they will continue communicating schedule changes through mbta.com/alerts, the M ticket app and official agency channels.

The agencies closed by stressing safety: follow posted prohibited-items lists, listen to public-safety officials and report suspicious activity.
