Ordinance committee actions: building renaming tabled; personnel, parking and event items referred

The ordinance committee handled several short and routine items in a block of votes after debating major resolutions.

- Item 25426 (rename municipal building for U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Alex R. Jimenez): The committee voted to table the item at the request of the administration because Director Vtor Ortega was absent; Councilors raised concerns about naming precedent given other public memorials already honoring Alex Jimenez.

- Item 26126 (review of sexual harassment policy and reporting procedures): Councilor Lung requested an update to the city’s sexual harassment policy (last reviewed in 2007) to address modern issues such as social media and to clarify investigative responsibilities; the committee moved the matter to the personnel department for review.

- Items 25526–25926 (resident and handicap parking requests): Several street parking requests were referred to the Lawrence Police Department and Department of Public Works for measurement, review and recommendation.

- Item 26026 (National Grid request to install sign on Broadway): Committee ordered a public hearing on the application (reference 31127752).

- Item 26226 (Ahmedar family picnic and sports day at O’Konum Park, June 20, 2026): The committee approved the event as recommended by the recreation department and forwarded it to the full council with a favorable recommendation.
