Beaumont teacher tells board TK/k contract must spell out classroom logistics and duties

At the public-comment period of the June 9 Beaumont Unified board meeting, kindergarten and transitional-kindergarten classroom teacher Hannah Edmonson urged trustees to accept contract language proposed by the Beaumont Teachers Association that would specify how half‑day TKK assignments are handled during the remainder of the teachers’ workday.

Edmonson said proposed language is based on a full year of classroom experience and that leaving classroom logistics to vague provisions risks confusion: "How will shared classrooms work? When will teachers collaborate with their grade level? Where will parent conferences be held in a shared room? What about toileting?" she asked, saying many children now arrive at school not fully toilet trained and that such duties cannot be shoehorned into unspecified "other duties." She asked trustees to refer to the BTA’s TKK proposal and adopt proactive contract language to protect students, families and teachers.

Trustees thanked Edmonson for her comments; no immediate bargaining action or formal motion was recorded at the meeting. The comment was entered into the record and district staff were expected to note the request for consideration during upcoming negotiations.
