Councilors spent part of the meeting reviewing whether to continue the ad hoc practice of appointing the same person to multiple boards and asked staff to include clearer language in an updated board-and-commission policy expected in August.
The interviews followed a structured format. Mayor Pro Tem Joe Anderson and three council members asked each applicant a standard set of questions in two rounds, with ten minutes allowed per candidate. Applicants highlighted a mix of professional and volunteer experience and local ties.
Why it matters: Council members said they want consistent rules for new applicants and reappointments. Several councilors noted the city had relaxed limits on incumbents during earlier staffing shortages, and some argued that when applications are plentiful the city should prioritize spreading service opportunities to more residents. The council did not change policy during the meeting but agreed to resume the topic at the next regular council meeting before finalizing appointments.
What council discussed: During a preliminary caucus after the interviews, councilors provisionally assigned applicants to likely boards and agreed to contact a small number of candidates for clarification. The appointments themselves will appear on next Monday’s council agenda for official action; staff told council members the board-and-commission policy with possible changes on dual appointments is scheduled for August.
No formal vote or ordinance was taken at the interview session. The clerk’s office will notify applicants after council action next week.
