Island County appoints Michelle Schisler interim county clerk after Van Pels announces retirement

The Island County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously April 28 to appoint Michelle Schisler as interim county clerk under RCW 36.16.115 after court clerk Deborah Van Pels announced her retirement effective May 1.
Catherine Reed, Island County human resources director, told the board the chief deputy clerk should serve as interim while the county follows the RCW 36.16.070 and RCW 36.16.115 processes and completes interviews on May 6 to identify the longer-term interim appointment.
A commissioner moved to appoint Schisler “as the interim county clerk per RCW 36.16.115 until such time as there is an election or appointment as required by law,” and the motion was seconded and approved. Chair (Commissioner) thanked Schisler for stepping into the role during the transition: “I’m grateful that you’re willing to step up and bring your experience to the position during the transition time.”
Van Pels’s last day was stated as May 1; the board said interviews to determine the ongoing interim clerk will take place May 6. The motion carried unanimously.
