Panel advances bill to stabilize Medi‑Cal acupuncture benefit

Lin Yang, former president of the California Acupuncture Coalition, said licensed acupuncturists serve as primary care providers in some communities and that inconsistent Medi‑Cal treatment of acupuncture creates barriers. Dr. Lily Chao of Northeast Medical Services described acupuncture as an important nonpharmacologic option for underserved patients, saying it is "essential care" for many.
Supporters included community health centers, unions (UAW), universities, patient groups and provider associations; several patients spoke in favor. The committee voted to send SB 944 to Appropriations.
