Commission forms auditor-review subcommittee, flags e-bike safety and body‑worn camera policy for future sessions

Commissioners discussed and agreed to create an auditor-review subcommittee to prepare review samples and draft recommendations. Several members volunteered to participate; one volunteer agreed to chair the subcommittee. Members said they would meet over the summer and aim to return recommendations to the full commission by October or November, while leaving open the possibility of an earlier report if work can be completed sooner.

The commission also reviewed long-range calendar items and requested that the police chief be invited to present an annual report or an addendum covering law-enforcement activity related to unhoused community interactions, investigations into online child pornography distribution and foster-youth cases, and traffic-safety responses. Commissioners referenced recent local bicycle and e-scooter incidents, including a fatality and a traumatic brain injury, as reasons to seek updated information and to coordinate with the Transportation Commission where appropriate.

Members raised a separate legislative item, identified in the meeting as Senate Bill 691, that would require agencies with body-worn-camera policies to update procedures for redaction requests (for example, emergency-service personnel seeking redaction of recordings of patients undergoing medical or psychological evaluation). Stephen said he is interested in the topic and that if the law is enacted, it would be impactful; commissioners asked staff to track the bill and schedule a future agenda item to review the department’s policy alignment with the statute.

Staff said they would check availability of older audit reports online, share data on case counts if requested, and coordinate meetings between subcommittee members and auditor staff to scope the subcommittee’s work.
