Mt Vernon board approves handbook changes, holds policy review, and accepts $200,000 planning grant with McCordsville

The Mt Vernon Community School Corporation board approved several administrative and fiscal actions at its June meeting, including handbook revisions, policy actions, a grant agreement, and routine consent items.
Policies and handbooks Administration presented the second reading of policies (listed in the board packet as 81-1911). A motion to accept the second reading passed unanimously, 5-0. The board also reviewed Policy B200 (board membership) during a first reading; the only change proposed is procedural — the board will acknowledge and sign the policy each January at its organizational meeting with no change to content.
The board approved revisions to the certified and classified staff handbooks. Administration highlighted revamped field trip procedures and a change to classified year-round staff vacation tiers: employees with more than 20 years of service will earn one additional vacation day for every five years beyond 20, up to a maximum of 25 days.
Meal pricing Food service presented a memo recommending no increase to student meal prices for the 2026–27 school year; the recommendation reflects program benchmarks and federal/state rules guiding meal pricing. The board approved keeping student meal prices unchanged.
Grant agreement with McCordsville The board approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Town of McCordsville that enables the district to participate in planning for a $200,000 energy-efficiency and safe-routes grant. Administration said the grant requires no district match; the district will submit expenditures and be reimbursed for eligible costs.
Consent agenda and donations The board approved the consent agenda, which included personnel reports, claims, construction items, fund transfers, donations, an overnight field-trip request, and records destruction. The board publicly acknowledged a donated contribution totaling more than $16,000 to the district’s Angel Fund (most of it raised through a turkey-trot event) and a recent $1,664.91 donation from Three Rivers.
Next steps: Administration will finalize and sign the grant agreement with McCordsville and distribute handbook materials to staff ahead of the new school year.
