Covington County approves application for federal Safe Streets for All grant

The Covington County Commission on May 12 voted to authorize staff to apply for a federal Safe Streets for All grant to develop a safety action plan for the county'maintained road system.
County Engineer Derick Donaldson said the grant is an 80/20 match and would fund a safety action plan that helps identify locations and needs for future projects. Mr. Donaldson said Southeast Alabama Regional Planning will submit the application on the county's behalf and that the application process itself does not carry an application fee.
Commissioner Ben Courson moved to approve applying for the Safe Streets for All grant; Commissioner Lynne Holmes seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Commissioners framed the vote as authorization to pursue external funding and start the planning work if the county is selected for the grant.
