Covington County approves vehicle purchases, accepts donated truck and awards vegetation contract; authorizes roll-off bids

Commissioners approved several departmental equipment, contract and staffing items May 26 intended to address failing county vehicles and maintain rights-of-way.
County Engineer Derick Donaldson said multiple trucks have engine and transmission issues and requested approval to purchase vehicles. The commission approved buying two Ford F-150s that are in stock on the state bid and ordered a 550 cab and chassis; the purchases will follow the state bid process through Stivers. Commissioner Lynne Holmes moved to buy the two in-stock F-150s and order the 550; Commissioner Tommy McGaha seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Sheriff Blake Turman reported PowerSouth donated a 2012 Ford F-250 (about 167,000 miles) that the sheriff's office will use to pull heavy equipment, assist the county’s EMA with trailers and support community cleanups. The commission approved accepting the vehicle.
Donaldson said bids were solicited for right-of-way herbicide spraying and mowing; only one bid was received from IVM Solutions LLC, which he recommended awarding. Commissioner Ben Courson moved to award the bid with the condition that Donaldson must return to the commission for approval before using brush-control or bridge-and-culvert vegetation applications; the motion passed unanimously.
Communications Director Kyle Adams asked the commission to solicit bids for a roll-off container program under a one-year contract with two one-year renewal options, to begin June 15, 2026; the commission authorized soliciting bids.
Separately, the commission approved changes to the Engineer’s Department manning chart, authorized hiring four additional part-time employees (for a total of six) to work up to 28 hours weekly, and allowed hiring two to three summer helpers; motions carried unanimously.
