At its April 2, 2026 meeting, the Little Canada Parks & Recreation Commission received a series of maintenance and program updates from staff and commissioners.
Parks and Recreation Director Steve Anderson said follow‑up with Public Works found that a sinkhole at Jackson and Lake Street was caused by plowing under soft conditions and that repairs are expected within a week. He also said staff will address Pioneer Park dripline exposure and that the maintenance team is preparing landscape pavers for a walkway. Anderson reported a company will begin replacement and repair work next week on the Veterans Memorial basin and bubbler system; lighting will be included in that project.
On operations and seasonal programming, Recreation Coordinator Gina Brady said the community garden is now open to returning and new residents and that non‑residents may open plots beginning April 6. Brady also reported new and returning vendors are joining the farmers' market and outlined volunteer opportunities for the Sap Run and other upcoming youth and adult programs.
Commissioners provided park‑specific updates: Commissioner Owens reported the Thunder Bay/Westwinds trail connection between Maplewood and Pioneer Park looks good but some pollinator signs had fallen; Commissioner Gelderman said Nadeau Park generally looks good but identified scuffs on slides, small holes in an awning and a missing picnic‑table piece (she offered to provide photos); Commissioner Hipp suggested another nature play area at Nadeau and described creating color books and QR codes to promote Art in the Park. Commissioner Tuomie said he is coordinating with the school to advertise Art in the Park and asked whether the submission deadline could be extended from May 1 to May 2 to coincide with the Sap Run; Hipp said that was probably possible and several commissioners volunteered to distribute flyers.
Other operational notes: portable restrooms have been placed in parks; Rondeau’s benches and pavilion look good and the basketball court has been resurfaced; Commissioner Watrud requested an additional trash can on the north side of the lake at Gervais Mill; staff said the little library at Thunder Bay playground is likely City‑owned and will be checked for repairs. Director Anderson noted the Spooner upper parking lot project was awarded at the last Council meeting and that bathroom and shelter improvements will be completed before Canadian Days; staff have submitted funding requests for a proposed pedestrian bridge over I‑35E.
The meeting also recorded routine commissioner reports and ended with a motion to adjourn at 7:34 p.m.
