Dobbs Ferry to begin test pits and design work for Cedar Street water-main replacement

Village officials told the Board of Trustees on June 9 that the Cedar Street water-main replacement project will begin with test pits to locate existing utilities and guide the design for a phased replacement of the existing 6-inch main with an 8-inch main.
Staff said four test pits will be dug to map utilities and water mains; the engineering team will incorporate those findings into plans, specifications and a schedule. Construction will be staged, with temporary above-ground water supply and flushing required during any day when the system is transferred to the new main. Officials noted the contractor must coordinate hydrant access, detours and public notification; police and DPW will help manage traffic and safety during work.
Trustees said the contractor intends to work in short runs (100–300 feet at a time), maintain the existing main until the new line is ready for transfer, and then remove and repave the disturbed sections. Staff also said they will hold the contractor to safety and site-cleanliness standards and will issue eblasts with details to residents ahead of any shutdowns or water service changes.
No start date for major construction was finalized in the meeting; staff said design and permitting must be completed after the test pits are evaluated.
