Millinocket aging-group reports small grants, food-security funds and garden sign-ups

Members of Age Friendly Millinocket reported several funding and program updates at their June 9 meeting.
Participants said the group secured $1,500 to continue retaining fundraising consultant Paige to support the heating security fund. Members discussed past fundraising for heating assistance and noted the prior year’s total was listed in discussion as $37,237; attendees also referenced late donations that at times made running totals appear closer to $40,000.
Nicole reported the group received $2,000 from a food council network meeting to support food-security work housed at the library. Members said they hope to connect the community garden to food-security programming, such as workshops from extension services and sharing excess produce.
The community garden currently has 10 plots; members reported seven are claimed. Organizers discussed outreach to fill remaining plots and ideas for cooperative programming, workshops and harvesting sharing tables.
Next steps include coordinating with extension and other partners to plan workshops, deciding how to house the food-security effort at the library and using outreach channels to recruit garden participants.
