Volunteers clean Jerry Pond; Millinocket workgroup to pursue accessible wharf

At its June 9 meeting, Age Friendly Millinocket members recapped a May community cleanup at Jerry Pond and said an upcoming workgroup will prioritize construction of an accessible wharf.
"I guesstimate around 50," a member said when describing turnout for the cleanup. Volunteers collected bags of debris, and the group posted photographs showing the site improvements.
Members described the Jerry Pond wharf as narrow and not easily usable by people with mobility issues; the workgroup plans to follow up with partners, including an assessment attributed in the meeting to an organization labeled 'Alpha,' and to pursue design changes that would broaden and make the wharf accessible.
Organizers said Stacy Gverson had emailed members to convene the workgroup this Thursday. The meeting will focus on the wharf as a top project and on advocacy to secure partners and volunteers to implement accessibility improvements.
Attendees also noted a lower turnout at the nearby Cen Pride Park cleanup but said both sites benefited from volunteer efforts. The group plans to continue annual cleanups and to coordinate with the Jerry Pond workgroup for follow-up activities and community engagement.
Next steps include the Thursday workgroup meeting, follow-up assessments and outreach to potential partners to support an accessible wharf project.
