The Arlington Select Board on June 8 unanimously approved one‑day beer and wine licenses for four World Cup viewing events at the Reservoir Beach on June 19, 23, 24 and 26.
Natasha Waden, Arlington’s director of recreation, told the board the events were organized quickly after Arlington native Miles Robinson was named to the U.S. men’s World Cup roster and that staff secured a FIFA display license and local partners, including the Arlington Boys & Girls Club and the Arlington Soccer Club. Waden outlined logistics: a large LED screen, additional lifeguards, beach monitors and gate staff; food trucks and concessions; and a partnership with Arlington Brewing Company to serve and monitor alcohol on site.
Waden said the reservoir can hold up to 2,500 people and that the recreation enterprise fund — including concessions revenue and gate receipts — will cover the additional staffing and police detail. "We can hold up to a capacity of 2,500 and we've done that very successfully," she told the board. Board members praised the organizers and the quick turnaround to secure the FIFA license; Mrs. Mahan moved approval and the license was approved unanimously.
The events will be free to enter one hour before each showing; the recreation department plans concession sales and fundraisers during the events. Waden said organizers will begin advertising immediately and work with volunteer groups and the soccer club for family‑oriented activities designed to highlight Robinson’s selection.
