Nelson County school board reviews annual policy updates — first reading focuses on SB3, expulsions and student enterprises

At the June 9 meeting, the Nelson County Board of Education considered its annual policy and procedure update in a first-reading format, noting many items reflect recent state legislation.

Board members emphasized transparency and legal compliance. One board member said much of the policy work responds to "federal and state statutes" and called out SB3 for financial-reporting changes that the district has largely been following since 2025. The board noted SB3’s requirement to post financial disclosures and timelines related to budget adoption.

On student safety, the board discussed recent state law changes. "There's a new law in Kentucky that any 6 through 12 student who intentionally assaults a teacher is expelled for a year," a board speaker said, adding that the provision does not apply to students with certain disabilities.

Administrators also described statutory clarifications around teacher-student communications under a recent bill, saying those changes "clean that up and make it easier for teachers to be able to communicate with students in certain circumstances." The update also incorporates House Bill 555, which the district described as opening opportunities for student-run enterprises such as school stores; officials said proceeds could support student scholarships and increase cafeteria participation in some cases.

The board treated this meeting as the first reading and said the policies will return in July for final consideration and submission to the state as required.
