Committee accepts superintendent evaluation and contractual raise; adopts policies and accepts donations

The Gardner School Committee voted unanimously on several administrative and personnel items during its June 8 meeting.
Attorney Blaylock presented the Committee's cumulative summative evaluation of the superintendent, reporting that the committee marked the superintendent 'proficient' across standards and that district and student learning goals were marked as either 'met' or showing 'significant progress.' "In terms of the different standards one through four, it was proficient with an overall rating of proficient based off of all of the committee's responses," Blaylock said. The Committee moved to accept the evaluation; after a second the motion passed with all members voting in favor.
Following the evaluation, Mrs. Rachel Cormier moved and Mr. Paul Cormier seconded a motion to grant the superintendent his contractual raise "by the parameters listed." The Committee voted to approve the raise with no discussion recorded.
On policy items, the policy subcommittee (Mrs. Hurst) presented four policies for second reading (GBEC — drug-free workplace; GBJ — personnel records; GCRD — tutoring for pay; ID — school day) and two policies for adoption (JKAA — physical restraint policy and procedure; KBG — parent advisory councils). The Committee moved, seconded and accepted the policies as presented.
The Committee also accepted donations: a referral from finance noted a donation from Peter Sauter (in memory of Helen May Sauter) to be forwarded to the full Committee; separately the Committee approved a $2,000 donation from the Soter family to the Department of Public Schools and thanked the donor.
Why it matters: the superintendent's positive summative rating and the approved contractual raise formalize personnel decisions that take effect per the superintendent's contract; adoption of personnel and student policies sets procedures for the coming year. The donations provide modest financial support for district programs. The Committee set no further formal conditions or follow-up motions on these items at the meeting.
Next steps noted in the meeting: informational updates on curriculum, grants and special education were provided in packet form; the next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 14, 2026.
