President Jane Sanders called the Madison Parish Police Jury to order June 9 in Tallulah and the panel approved a bundle of routine and capital actions including a vehicle purchase, immediate roof repairs and several road projects.
The jury authorized the purchase of a Ford F-350 4-wheel-drive crew cab with flatbed from Mac Haik for $65,800 after the Superintendent presented three quotes. Juror Johnny Hughes moved to buy the vehicle, and Juror Jerry Hicks seconded; the roll call vote recorded District 1 yea, District 2 absent, District 3 yea, District 4 yea, District 5 yea.
In response to reported damage to the Courthouse Building roof, jurors approved a motion—moved by Juror Jerry Hicks and seconded by Juror Dave Wilson—to begin immediate repairs while bids for full replacement are solicited and awarded. The motion carried with no recorded opposition.
Infrastructure work on Port Road was also approved. After discussion with Mrs. K. Sterling of the Port Commission about damaged sections, jurors voted to replace the damaged culverts. The meeting record also lists three quotes for patching Port Road (D & J Construction $18,900.00; Dreher Contracting $39,800.84; Amethyst Construction $39,000.00) and a related motion carried by roll call. The transcript does not specify which, if any, contractor was formally selected to perform the patching.
The jury continued routine personnel and administrative business: Juror Jerry Hicks moved and Juror Dave Wilson seconded the appointment of Mrs. L. Haggard to the Recreation Board for a four-year term; the motion carried.
Jurors adopted an ordinance, on motion by Juror Johnny Hughes and second by Juror Dave Wilson, to allow an adjoining landowner to purchase adjudicated property on North Walnut Street without public bidding in accordance with RS 47:2202; the motion carried.
A personnel matter involving a diluted drug test result concluded with jurors voting to permit the student to retake the test at the student’s expense; jurors noted a successful negative retest would allow the student an opportunity for hire.
The Secretary/Treasurer, Margarett Dew, also reported that the Vicksburg Tallulah Regional Airport board and tenants opposed construction of proposed wind turbines in the area; the record notes the Federal Aviation Administration had approved the plans but the airport board wanted its opposition entered on record.
Other routine items approved without recorded opposition included the consent agenda (May 27 minutes; building, financial, garbage/sewer and outstanding invoice reports), authorization to pay invoices as funds become available, and a motion to clear brush on Wright Street. The meeting adjourned after Juror Jerry Hicks moved to adjourn; minutes were signed by Secretary/Treasurer Margarett Dew and President Jane Sanders.
Votes at a glance: Consent agenda — motion carried (no roll-call detail); Truck purchase (Mac Haik, $65,800) — roll call recorded 4 yeas, 1 absent; Port Road culvert replacement — motion carried (no roll-call detail recorded in text); Port Road patching quotes — motion carried by roll call (transcript does not specify contractor selected); Ordinance (adjudicated property sale under RS 47:2202) — motion carried; Drug test retake allowed — roll call recorded 4 yeas, 1 absent.
