Bonham certifies May 2 charter amendments, installs incoming mayor and new council members

Bonham officials on May 11 canvassed the returns of the May 2 Special Election and adopted amendments to the city’s Home Rule Charter after the City Secretary announced 162 votes were cast of 4,745 registered voters and all proposed amendments passed.
Municipal Judge Michael Evans administered the Oath of Office to Mayor-elect Allen Sanderson and newly elected council members Jerrad Besch, Wolf Laughing and Ernie Quintana, who were then seated on the dais. Mayor Sanderson called for nominations for Mayor Pro tem; Ernie Quintana nominated Kevin Hayes, seconded by Sam Fox, and Hayes was selected by acclamation and sworn in by Judge Evans.
In his first remarks as mayor, Allen Sanderson said his priorities include expanding residential growth and commercial development to broaden the tax base, revitalizing Bonham’s historic downtown, creating jobs, improving quality of life and strengthening cooperation with Bonham Independent School District and the County Commissioners. He urged residents to stay informed and described how to receive official city information.
The council’s formal action to adopt the charter amendments was taken by motion (moved by Ernie Quintana and seconded by Clark Smith) and recorded as carried. The meeting then proceeded to routine business.
