Pleasant Valley board hears enrollment update showing small net gain but certified roll down 84 students

District staff presented an enrollment snapshot at the June 8 board meeting, reporting modest shifts in student counts and continued monitoring through July.

Presenter Mr. Stru reviewed counts as of June 1 and said, "There has not been a lot of movement in the open enrollment situation" since spring. He noted that when comparing current kindergarten through 11th-grade cohorts, the district shows a net gain of 14 students from last year, but the certified enrollment figure for this year is down 84 students compared with the prior year.

Officials pointed to specific classroom pressures: some kindergarten sections were reduced, Bridge View had nine open seats after some families chose not to use open enrollment, and sixth grade was among the tighter grades. The presenter said moving from kindergarten to first grade increases class-size capacity (from 22 to 24), which will recover roughly 30 seats districtwide. Staff also described patterns at junior high and high school and said principal-level scheduling could require reassignments if class sizes change during the summer.

Board members asked for historical context and staff provided a multi-year comparison, saying certified enrollment declines of recent years add up but that incoming class sizes show positive variance in places. The board directed staff to continue monitoring open enrollment, homeschooling and transfers and to report certified counts in October.

The update provided operational details that will affect staffing and sectioning decisions for the coming school year; no board action was taken on enrollment during the meeting.
