Commissioners back $500,000 county contribution to Mill Creek flood‑reduction project

The Walla Walla County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously April 20 to approve a proposal authorizing the Port of Walla Walla to expend port funds and the county to use a portion of its Economic Development Sales Tax Fund for the Mill Creek Channel CAP‑205 flood damage reduction project.
Staff said the Port Commissioners recommended a $1,000,000 expenditure and noted the county previously approved $500,000. The Port and county had coordinated an updated interlocal agreement and cost strategy; port staff and the county engineer confirmed no additional requests from the economic development fund are expected for this project at this time.
"It appears that they've obviously recommended the expenditure of $1,000,000," a commissioner said, summarizing the Port’s action; Port staff confirmed the funding strategy met the project needs and that the Port Commission would take its own action to adopt the interlocal agreement.
Commissioners praised the interagency coordination and moved to approve Proposal 2026‑6420; the motion passed 3–0.
Next steps: Public Works and Port staff will finalize the interlocal agreement and proceed with project scheduling and design steps already outlined in the grant and project documents.
