The Historic Preservation Commission agreed May 19 to support public outreach for the North Heights historic-survey project and to have a presence at the neighborhood Porchfest this fall.
Staff reported Urbana Preservation & Planning will be in Joplin June 1–3 to conduct fieldwork and hold a public meeting on June 2 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the fifth floor of City Hall; staff said they will submit limited comments on Urbana's draft survey forms to meet State Historic Preservation Office requirements. The commission was told 50% reimbursement for phase 1 is expected around July, with full project close-out targeted toward year-end.
Commissioners discussed outreach at North Heights Porchfest (the second weekend in October), suggesting the commission partner with Neighborhood Services and field two- to three-hour shifts rather than staffing the booth all day. Staff suggested using members of the PPP subcommittee to coordinate the activity and noted the recently approved local landmark property might serve as a visible location for outreach.
Members asked staff to circulate the public-meeting bulletin to neighborhood contacts and to coordinate volunteer shifts. Staff said they would follow up with neighborhood services and confirm logistics.
The commission emphasized that the public meeting and Porchfest outreach are intended to raise awareness of preservation options and gather community input for the North Heights survey.
