Director Sean Bauer, who led calls for a stronger restriction, said research and recent neighboring‑district decisions pointed toward stricter limits. Several board members supported the change as an incremental policy step but said further study was needed. "It's a start of a conversation," one director said, urging staff to review neighboring districts’ approaches and the science on student outcomes.
The motion to adopt the policy passed 6–1. The no vote expressed concern about absolute bans and urged care for students who rely on devices for accessibility or medical reasons.
Board members also requested additional work over the summer and next year to compare peer districts’ policies and return with potential stronger language or implementation strategies that balance classroom management, equity and special‑needs accommodations.
The adopted policy change was placed in the board’s monitoring framework for future review.
