Poudre board adopts revised student personal-device policy after debate

The Poudre School District Board voted 6–1 on June 9 to adopt revisions to Policy JICJ, which addresses students’ possession and use of personal technology devices in schools.
Director Scott Schoenbaum and others argued that the proposed language does not go far enough and urged the board to study more restrictive options, including a ‘bell-to-bell’ ban used by neighboring districts. Schoenbaum described recent research and peer-district policy moves and said stricter limits can ease classroom management and improve student focus.
Other trustees said the revised policy is a vetted, iterative step that was developed with input from principals and stakeholders and that it creates a framework the district can strengthen later. Multiple board members said they supported adoption tonight while committing to future, deeper review.
The board recorded a 6–1 vote in favor; one director voted no. Trustees asked staff to return with comparative policies from peer districts and follow-up metrics for classroom implementation.
