Councilor Travis Chambers said Begley has “the professional capabilities” and a background in finance and municipal operations but argued the council should have allowed the incoming mayor and newly elected council members a role in the selection process: “Moving forward with a permanent administrative appointment just 1 week before the election…risks disconnecting the choice from the incoming administration,” Chambers said.
Councilor Barnes also opposed the timing and raised concerns about the proposed compensation package; she asked Begley to withdraw so he could be considered through a process that included the incoming officials. Other councilors and business and community supporters countered that Begley’s prior council service and municipal experience made him a qualified choice. The motion and second were called on the floor, and the council voted to confirm the appointment by voice/hand counts on the dais. Begley thanked the body and pledged to be “transparent” and to focus on execution.
The confirmation sets an administrative transition in motion in the weeks ahead.
