Police Chief David Pernice briefed council on enforcement and policy items at the June 25 meeting, saying the department has arranged for additional coverage during the French Creek Festival and expects Erie County detectives to help fund overtime and provide two to three officers from the Erie County Courthouse to assist.
Pernice said he has been completing a background check required by Civil Service rules and expects to finish it by July 5, 2024. He described work with Lexipol — the vendor that provides model policies and updates — and said he has been removing policies no longer needed and making updates; the revisions remain under solicitor review before final adoption.
On equipment, Pernice told council that license-plate readers (LPRs) have the capacity to record video and search plates across jurisdictions, which he said can assist investigations “anywhere in the country.” Council asked that Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips review angled parking in Municipal Lot #2 as part of the parking-ordinance amendment discussion. No formal action or policy changes were taken at the meeting; council deferred ordinance changes pending solicitor input.
