Committee approves parent-involvement policy for first reading; asks communications staff to modernize media and materials policies
Summary
The policy committee voted 3-0 to send an updated parent-involvement policy to the full board and asked communications staff to review long-standing media-relations and material-distribution policies to include electronic postings, clarify PA announcements, and examine religious-material rules.
The committee voted unanimously on June 9 to forward policy P1110 (parent involvement) to the full board for a first reading, after members discussed structure, professional-development language, and whether family "training" should read as information and support.
Members also examined older community-relations and distribution-of-materials policies (some last updated decades ago). Committee members asked Rebecca (communications staff) and principals to review the media-relations wording and to modernize references to website posts, electronic displays, and PA announcements. Members suggested removing the term "curricular" from the PA-announcement restriction so that school cultural and extracurricular announcements (sports, plays, robotics) remain allowable with administrative approval.
The committee flagged a section in a sample CAPE model concerning dissemination of religious materials and asked the administration to review legal time/place/manner language before returning to the committee.
Motion and vote: Andrea moved and Sean seconded moving P1110 to the full board for a first reading; the committee approved the motion 3-0. Several other communications-related policies will be returned for further staff review.
