Newport students win EV race and present Generation Citizen civics projects

The Newport School Committee recognized Rogers High School automotive students for building and racing a fully electric car at a May competition in Charlestown, where they won first place in the modified division after running five-lap races and finishing more than a minute ahead of competitors. Instructor Chris Lia and school leaders highlighted the students' work on multiple electrical systems and hands-on engineering skills.
Thompson Middle School students who participated in the Generation Citizen civics program presented two projects to the committee: one aiming to increase substance-abuse awareness and another focused on improving school lunches and meal schedules. Teacher Tara Melo described Generation Citizen as a curriculum that "empowers students to become active citizens by identifying real issues in their school and community"; students described surveys, interviews with counselors and community partners, and state-level recognition for their work.
What’s next: Several student groups will present their projects again to the City Council and be recognized at a state senate meeting; the committee congratulated students and encouraged further community partnerships and district support for CTE and civics education.
