Interim superintendent Peter Sanioni introduced; committee thanks outgoing leader Colleen Germaine

The Newport School Committee introduced Dr. Peter Sanioni as interim superintendent on the opening of its June meeting. Sanioni said he appreciates the committee’s confidence and plans to work with the school committee and administrative team to improve student outcomes. "I will rely upon 20 years as a superintendent and many years as an administrator," Sanioni said, asking the committee and community for partnership as he steps into the role.

The committee also formally recognized outgoing Superintendent Dr. Colleen Burns Germaine, who has led the district for 12½ years. Board members credited Germaine with strengthening partnerships with city departments, securing nearly $10 million in grant funding during her tenure, shepherding major capital projects including a new Rogers High School and Pel Elementary renovations, and guiding the district through the COVID transition. "Her legacy will be reflected for years to come," Dr. Flowers said in remarks presenting the committee’s gratitude.

Germaine, speaking to the committee, said leadership is a team effort and urged the community to keep students at the center of decisions. "When change is hard, change is difficult, but if we come together we will be very successful," she said, thanking staff and committee members for the opportunity to serve.

What’s next: Sanioni will serve as interim superintendent for the 2026–27 school year while the committee and municipal partners finalize budget and staffing discussions for the coming year.
