Marine View Park vandalism, trail updates and Arbor Day plans top Parks Commission reports

During routine park reports at the April 15 meeting, commissioners raised several maintenance and public-safety items and reviewed upcoming events.

Marine View Park: A commissioner described a downed branch over a chain-link fence, cut brush left near the parking lot, several broken and snapped railing boards on the stairs to the beach, and informational signs that had been broken and thrown onto the beach. The commissioner said they had taken photos and staff asked that the pictures be sent to the parks staff. "There was also a broken post with a cement base that washed ashore," the commissioner added; staff said replacement signs are in progress and maintenance work is scheduled.

Trails and Walker restoration: Staff said the Highlands trail concept is moving forward after surveying and that Walker restoration and ivy-pull events are scheduled (Walker event April 18; community forestry event May 1 at Marine View Park). Commissioners reported a soggy section on the North Loop that may require re-routing and noted bluebells and ferns returning in spring.

Pea Patch Community Garden: Staff reported all plots have been claimed; gardeners are sharing an ADA-accessible box so a wait-listed person can participate this season.

Events: Commissioners confirmed Arbor Day on April 25, a May 1 concert (Whirling Winds quintet) at John Knox chapel, a May 16 flower-arranging session, an early-June sound-bath event, and the Music in the Park series starting July 12. Staff noted a food-truck vendor had been slow to confirm for Arbor Day and asked for volunteers for setup and staffing.

Staff emphasized cleanup priorities and safety; no emergency actions were taken at the meeting, but staff will follow up on repairs and sign replacements.
