Arts commission seeks volunteers, bids to refresh Mar Vista bathroom mural

The Normandy Park Arts Commission and parks staff told the Parks Commission on April 15 that the Mar Vista bathroom mural has been repeatedly tagged and is ready for a refresh. Staff proposed putting the mural project out for bid and asked for a small ad hoc group of parks commissioners to work with arts commissioners and staff to review proposals and provide feedback.
"It's been tagged a lot...they felt strongly that it's just probably time to refresh and do a new mural," staff said, noting the Arts Commission plans to pay artists who are awarded the work. Commissioners agreed volunteers from the parks commission should serve on the review panel to help evaluate visual appeal and community fit.
Staff discussed criteria used previously for public art projects and suggested outreach to local muralists; commissioners asked for a schedule and for staff to circulate the bid materials when ready. No contract award occurred at the meeting; the commission asked staff to proceed with a public call for bids and to return with submissions for review.
