Council readies questions as Port prepares Sustainable Airport Master Plan presentation

Deputy mayor will facilitate the city’s June engagement with the Port after staff announced representatives will brief the Normandy Park City Council on the Sustainable Airport Master Plan and the environmental review during the June 9 meeting. Staff asked councilmembers to forward resident concerns and top questions so the city can present them to the Port during the public presentation.
“There's a certain amount of resident concern and activism on this issue that we can just do nothing but listen,” Mayor Eric Zimmerman said, framing the city’s limited authority over federal aviation operations and regulation. He urged councilmembers to use the city’s existing mechanisms—such as prior participation in Airport Roundtable activities—to press for local protections while recognizing federal agencies control many outcomes.
Several councilmembers pressed for a proactive approach. One member said staff should solicit a top FAQ list from residents and circulate questions to the council ahead of the June presentation so members can ask them directly. Amy Lloyd, parks and recreation manager, and other staff will reach out to constituents who have already written to the city and invite broader input via the city’s email list.
The council discussed whether to reschedule the Port presentation to allow more preparation time; staff emphasized the Port is already hosting multiple community forums during the formal comment period and that rescheduling may not be possible. Council consensus favored compiling resident questions and arriving prepared to ask the Port specific, documented concerns.
The June 9 presentation will occur during a regular council meeting; staff said no formal council action is planned that night but recommended members use their speaking time to ask the Port for clarifying responses to the compiled resident questions. The city will also circulate the relevant materials and the CPAP/EIS links so residents can review primary documents ahead of the Port briefing.
The matter remains at the study/discussion stage; council members said they want clearer mechanisms for community input and a concise list of priority questions to present to the Port during the scheduled engagement.
