Brian Head adopts 10-year RDA interlocal extension with Iron County; county reduces share to 30%

The Brian Head Town Council on May 12 adopted Resolution No. 26-574 extending the interlocal agreement that governs the Brian Head Redevelopment Agency (RDA).
Town Manager Bret Howser said Iron County agreed to a 10-year extension but requested that its contribution of tax increment be reduced from 60% to 30%, a change With an approximate annual financial impact to the RDA of $67,500. Howser added that the Iron County Commission approved its portion of the interlocal agreement earlier the same morning.
Howser also said the Iron County School District has indicated willingness to discuss participation but its finance committee will not meet until August; if the school district eventually agreed to contribute 30% with a base year of the current year, the added increment could more than offset the county's reduction. Howser described the RDA as a strategic tool to attract commercial development, including a potential skier base village, and noted the town already holds land that could be used for parking or infrastructure tied to such development.
Council Member Larry Freeberg moved to adopt the resolution; Council Member Logan Cruz seconded the motion. The measure passed 5-0. The council then recessed, convened as the RDA Board, and the board adopted the companion resolution by the same 5-0 vote.
The interlocal extension is intended to preserve the RDA as a development tool while negotiations with the school district continue.
