Animal control reports 90% live‑release rate and new community programs

Mike McNut of Hardin County animal control told the Fiscal Court on June 9 that the shelter’s year‑to‑date dog adoptions are up (547, nine more than last year) and that the shelter’s live‑release rate sits at roughly 90%, qualifying it as a no‑kill facility.
"The year to date the shelter live release rate is sitting at 90%. So that is classified as a no kill shelter," Mike McNut said, and added that cat live‑release rates are slightly higher.
McNut detailed community and volunteer efforts that are improving outcomes: partnerships with Keller Williams, Heartland Realtor and Buffalo Wild Wings for community service, donations from Best Friends (discussed in the meeting as around $6,000) and a weekly pilot that lets members of the public take a dog out for the day to increase socialization and adoption prospects. At the first outing, one dog was adopted the same day and another adoption was pending, he said.
Monthly operations for May included 44 adoptions, 149 spay/neuter surgeries, 623 visitors and continued efforts to reduce length of stay. McNut said complaints investigated year‑to‑date numbered 1,453 and that returns to owner were 273 for the year.
Next steps: the shelter will continue volunteer recruitment and the day‑out pilot to reduce kennel time and improve adoption outcomes.
