A representative from the courthouse briefed the board on the Virginia Deed Alert system being offered in Essex County. The program, created by the Virginia Supreme Court and offered to clerk's offices, sends an electronic notification when a land record matching a registrant's name is recorded.
The presenter said the program is limited to Essex County land records and that users must register correctly (including exact name spelling) and provide an email address to receive a one‑time code. "This program will allow citizens to receive an electronic notification whenever a document is recorded in my office with land records that matches the name that you register," the presenter said. She stressed the service "does not prevent documents from being recorded in my office or validate the legality of the filing" and advised anyone who receives notice of a fraudulent document to contact an attorney because the office cannot unrecord filings.
Staff said flyers and a QR code are available, and the county website includes a link to register. Several board members praised the move to online land records and the added transparency it offers citizens.
What happens next: residents can register through the county website or by visiting the clerk's office; staff will make registration help available for residents without cell phones.
