Joplin Sports Authority reports record economic impact for events year despite fewer room nights
Summary
Joplin Sports Authority told council the year's 24 events generated about 14,507 room nights and approximately $10 million in economic impact, up from $8.9 million the prior year; Jared said increased average daily rates and event recruitment drove the gains, though facility access remains the primary constraint.

At the Joplin City Council informal meeting on Dec. 1, 2025, Jared from the Joplin Sports Authority presented the organization's year-end report, saying a banner year produced increased economic impact even though room nights declined slightly.
Jared (Joplin Sports Authority) said JSA hosted 24 events that produced 14,507 room nights for participants and reported approximately $2,054,000 in market room revenue; incidental‑spending estimates produced total tax revenue from lodging operations of about $263,000 and incremental incidental-spending tax revenues that brought total tax receipts to roughly $759,867 — up about $110,000 from the previous year. Jared said the total economic impact for the year was roughly $10 million versus $8.9 million the previous year. He noted the figures are conservative because they count participants and staff rather than all visitors and rely on available STR/STAHL report data.
Jared outlined 25 events currently scheduled for the coming year and highlighted several new or significant events, including the Freeman Health Lady Eagle basketball tournament, the Neosho holiday classic (many teams staying in Joplin), the AJGA junior championship at Twin Hills, collegiate postseason baseball, and various state championships. He said event recruitment and bids (including NCAA Division II cross-country and other regional championships) continue and that JSA aims to grow event numbers as facilities become available.
Jared thanked partner organizations and volunteers — citing help from Joplin Schools athletic director Matt Hyatt, OCC coach Lamb, Missouri Southern staff and others — and said sponsorships and community volunteers are critical to hosting national events.
Councilmember Koppel noted an audit recommendation to provide more detail in accounting for expenditures that may go to organizations outside the City of Joplin; Jared and Steve Taylor, JSA treasurer, said they had already added a link in the JSA financial statements to show event-related expenditures and improve compliance with the audit suggestions.
